Any time in the first half of the month (before the FULL moon is a great time to say this prayer:

Praised are YOU who created the skies with your word, & all heaven’s host with the breath of your mouth. You gave them appointed times & roles, & they never miss their cues, doing their CREATOR’s bidding with gladness & joy. Praised are YOU who renews NEW MOONS.

Celebrating Rosh Chodesh

One of the most distinctive elements of Judaism - and one that has helped preserve our unique way of life - is our calendar.

Rosh Chodesh, the first day of the new month, is when we see the first sliver of light after the old moon fades completely. From the earliest of times, Rosh Chodesh has been celebrated as a semi- holiday. Each month of the Jewish calendar has its own personality. Some months are happy, like Adar, for the raucous redemption of Purim occurs in it. Some are subdued, like Cheshvan, for it has no holiday at all. Some are tragic, like Av, for we remember the destruction of the Temple. But, regardless of the historic texture of the month, Rosh Chodesh - the FIRST day of each Jewish month- is always joyous. It reminds us that our lives are always full of new possibilities. Just as the moon is relentless in its pursuit of renewal, so too can we be as well.

Rosh Chodesh: a monthly birthday/ Holiday reserved for Jewish Women

Because the Israelite women didn’t participate in the sin of building the Golden Calf (in spite of the men’s demands that the women donate their gold jewelry to construct the bovine idol, the women refused), the great commentator Rashi declared Rosh Chodesh a holiday specifically for Jewish women.

For this, the Divine gifted Jewish women Rosh Chodesh, an extra time of rest and study each month. It just so happened this holiday coincided with our traditional menstruating time. (But let’s be real; there are no coincidences.)

Using the New Moon and Full Moon while they meet and complete each other, feels for me as one of the most magical and vital ways to manifest. While the New Moon is all about New Beginnings and setting intentions for what we wish to manifest, the Full Moon is all about completion (the FULL Circle), releasing and letting go of what no longer works for us and then "celebrating".

Moon reality recognizes possibilities, even when we don’t see them.

Moonology cards and crystals in a heart shape

Just as the moon draws the tides in & out, she draws us to celebrate EVERY new month.

HARNESS THE POWER OF THE NEW MOON   Like us, the moon is constantly going through phases. Its light increases, then decreases, and then repeats. It is in a continual cycle of death and rebirth. We can tap into that cycle, aligning our own actions with the energy of the moon. The New Moon is a particularly potent time for beginnings.

"Bereishit bara elokim means, "G-d creates beginnings, but it is us who create endings."-

Let the hardship meet the fire and be transformed into compassion, compassion for you or someone you love, compassion for the suffering that is around us. You can bring whatever you want to the fire. Whatever you bring there is transformed into compassion and love. Breathe in and out, watching what happens to the fire as you bring hardship there, as you bring breath there, as you focus on the fire.
